PSX Market Data Analysis Without Misleading Return Claims

Build a market-data study that respects corporate actions, trading dates, and data rights.

Define the research question and data permission

A Pakistan Stock Exchange project can study trading activity, price behaviour, or sector comparisons without pretending to predict profitable trades. Start with a bounded question, such as how daily turnover varies across a selected set of securities. Specify the sample period and why those securities were chosen before inspecting the results.

Use official PSX information and check the relevant access and redistribution conditions. Publicly viewable data are not automatically unrestricted for bulk collection or republication. Record the download date, fields, and source location. If redistribution is not permitted, publish code and instructions rather than copying the underlying dataset into a repository.

Create a trustworthy security and date model

Use a stable security reference table rather than assuming a ticker permanently identifies the same instrument. Record instrument type and relevant symbol changes where available. Build a trading calendar from observed market dates and investigate gaps. A missing observation is not automatically a zero return or a day with no trading.

Keep price, volume, and currency fields distinct. Validate duplicates, nonpositive prices where inappropriate, and inconsistent date formats. For an exercise, introduce two rows for the same security and trading date, then show how silent duplication distorts turnover and any subsequent joins to sector classifications.

Treat corporate actions as a first-class issue

A raw price change can reflect a corporate action rather than an ordinary market move. Distinguish unadjusted prices, any supplied adjusted series, and total-return calculations. Do not infer that an adjusted field includes cash dividends unless the provider's methodology says so. Document exactly what your chosen series represents.

Construct a tiny hypothetical split example. Show how a mechanical reduction in price can create a misleading negative return if the number of shares is ignored. Then discuss dividends separately. If reliable adjustment information is unavailable, narrow the analysis and disclose the limitation instead of presenting a falsely precise performance ranking.

Use comparisons that answer the same question

Calculate simple daily returns only after sorting within each security and checking the previous valid observation. Make explicit how suspensions, missing prices, and newly listed securities are handled. Compare periods with compatible coverage rather than giving a short-history security an apparently comparable long-run result.

When using a benchmark, inspect its official methodology. Price and total-return indexes answer different questions, and index composition can change. Avoid comparing a selected group of today's surviving firms with a historical index and calling the difference a successful strategy. Selection choices made with hindsight can manufacture convincing but unrepeatable findings.

Show uncertainty instead of a trading promise

Present distributions, rolling summaries, and coverage notes alongside any headline number. A high correlation over one period does not establish a persistent relationship or a reason to trade. Transaction costs, liquidity, execution timing, and taxes can materially separate a backtest from an attainable result.

Write a deliberately cautious conclusion: the selected sample showed a pattern during the observed window, but the study does not establish causation or future performance. If you test a rule, define it before evaluating a held-out period. Do not tune repeatedly on that period and continue calling it an untouched test.

Make the portfolio independently inspectable

Deliver a data dictionary, cleaning log, reproducible calculations, and a page explaining corporate-action treatment. Include a chart that highlights missing coverage rather than concealing it. A reviewer should be able to reproduce one security's return manually from the documented inputs and understand when that calculation is not appropriate.

Finish with an exercise comparing results under two reasonable missing-data treatments. Explain which conclusions remain stable and which disappear. This demonstrates research discipline more convincingly than a dramatic percentage gain. Frame the project as analytical education, not personalized investment advice or a claim of guaranteed performance in Pakistan's equity market.
